🍁 Best Autumn Walks Around Coniston (with a Pub at the End)

Coniston is one of the Lake District’s most atmospheric spots in autumn. As the fells turn bronze and the woodlands glow gold, this area becomes a walker’s paradise — and, luckily, it’s also home to some of the best pubs in Cumbria. Here are five top Coniston walks that combine crisp autumn air with a well-earned pint at the finish.

1. The Old Man of Coniston

Distance: 6–7 miles (circular)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

The Old Man is a true Lake District classic — and even more spectacular in autumn. The path climbs past the remains of old copper mines before reaching the summit, which offers sweeping views over Coniston Water and the surrounding russet fells.

Pub Stop: The Black Bull Inn, Coniston
Right in the heart of the village, this traditional pub is home to the Coniston Brewing Co. Treat yourself to a pint of Bluebird Bitter and a hearty meal by the fire after your descent.

2. Tarn Hows Circular

Distance: 2 miles (easy loop)
Difficulty: Easy

Tarn Hows is one of the most photographed spots in the Lake District — and for good reason. The circuit around the tarn is perfect for a gentle autumn stroll, with mirror-still reflections of copper and gold trees on the water.

Pub Stop: The Drunken Duck Inn, near Hawkshead
Just a short drive away, this famous gastropub offers locally sourced dishes and real ales — an ideal finish after a leisurely walk among autumn colours.

3. Coniston to Torver Trail

Distance: 4 miles (one way, can return via the same route or local bus)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate

This lakeside trail follows the old railway line between Coniston and Torver, offering stunning views of Coniston Water framed by autumnal woodland. It’s flat, peaceful, and ideal for a relaxed walk.

Pub Stop: The Wilsons Arms, Torver
A fantastic country pub serving generous portions and local ales. If you prefer to head back to Coniston, the Black Bull makes a fine alternative finish.

4. Beacon Tarn and Beacon Fell

Distance: 5.5 miles (circular)
Difficulty: Moderate

A slightly wilder walk, this route begins near Water Yeat at the southern tip of Coniston Water and takes you up Beacon Fell for panoramic autumn views, then down to the tranquil Beacon Tarn — often still and glassy under October skies.

Pub Stop: The Wilsons Arms, Torver
Pop in on your way back north — their wood-burning stove and hearty fare make this one of the coziest post-walk pubs in the area.

5. Brantwood and the Eastern Shore

Distance: 6 miles (out and back)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Start from Coniston village and follow the lakeshore path towards Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. The route hugs the water, with glorious autumn reflections and peaceful woodland sections.

Pub Stop: The Ship Inn, Coniston
Located close to the lakeshore, The Ship Inn is the perfect spot for a relaxed meal or drink overlooking the water after your walk.
